Our Verdict
Well it has crept up in price over the past few years, but Castiglione remains one of the best value Barolos you can buy. It is collected from the waterfall of barrels that don’t quite make the cut for the single vineyard wines (which is Vietti’s thing), blended to make a tremendously good Barolo without single vineyard designation. The Vietti style is modern but not oaky, nor soft … so kind of a midway wine. The vineyards are spectacularly managed and the winemaking impeccable. Pour this into a big glass, turn the lights down, put Mendelssohn on the turntable, close you eyes and smell the wine: you will be transported. And that is what Barolo is all about!
