Ô MA Santenay 'Sous La Roche' Chardonnay 2023
Our Verdict
If the traditionalist Burgundian winegrowers have run out of vineyard, it makes you wonder how a few very purposeful outsiders manage to get their toes into its hallowed soils. Jim Chatto, for example. Or Jane Eyre. Tom Williams - a Londoner - has managed to do so, along with his wife Stéphanie. And together they have created a rather spectacular new Burgundian wine brand named Ô Ma.
Only yesterday I tasted through the two wines left for the Queensland market, and both were very, very impressive. But for an extra few dollars it was the Santenay Blanc from a lieu-dit called ‘Sous de la Roche’ that won the battle of not just class and quality, but also value. It’s a wow of a wine with a fair lashing of fresh oak, but also piercing fruit, reduction snuggled (like a mille-fiuelle) between the fruit, the oak and the subtle, creamy notes.
This is high quality white burgundy that will repay five, maybe ten years in a good cellar. And (in terms of burgundy-pricing) it is terrifically inexpensive.
