McWilliams Maurice O'Shea Shiraz 2018
Our Verdict
There is an X-factor to top-end, old vine Hunter Shiraz. Not as bold as the South Australian crew; not as spicy as the cool climate stuff. But there is something to it that none of the others can match, and there are only a handful of wines (Graveyard perhaps?) that can say it as succinctly as this flagship four Mount Pleasant Wines. There is real intensity, but in a gentle, caressing, almost soft kind of way; the fruits are pretty rather than brooding. And there is plenty of apparent oak, but it sits rather quietly beside the vinous hubbub. Expensive, yes. But also masterful.
